Nir Ideal Home for Mentally Retarded and Associated Disability in short “Nir Ideal Home” was established on 9th December 2002 by a couple of persons who had a special feeling to the causes and consequences of the physically and mentally challenged people in the Society. The organization has been registered under the societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961 on the 09th December in the year 2002. The organization is promoting “District Level Resource Centre for disabled children, education and health development in the whole of Haroa, Minakhan, Sandeshkhali –I, Sandeshkhali –II, Hasnabad, Higalganj, Baduria, Basirhat-II, Swarupnagar and Deganga Blocks and two areas in Basirhat and Taki Municipalities. We did not stop here; we expanded our activities to reach the goal. As a result of which, we started to run Special School for children with disabilities and mentally challenged. But the Special School was not able to meet the demands of the above stated parents of persons with disabilities. Families were finding it too hard to bring their children to school due to lack of transport. Places where transport is available it is too expensive for the families to bear. Presently Nir Ideal Home works for the children with disabilities through Community Based Rehabilitation and Right Based Approach. NIR is a specialist resource centre for multiple disabilities highlighting for the rights of persons with disability and works on a state level in partnership with a close network of NGOs in many districts of West Bengal and Govt. departments of the state. It has vast state linkages and is working with advocacy groups in state and nationally for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
NIR offers multifaceted services to infants, children and adults with disabilities and a range of training programmes for persons with disability, parents and family members, professionals, students and personnel working in the community.
