About NGO
About NGO
South Kolkata Sannidhya (SKS), is a self-funded developmental NGO (Regd. No. S/I/L 65353 of 2009 – ‘10) with a focus of supporting the deformed due to burn (be it Acid or Fire) facing violence. With that we help other marginalized specially with Cleft lip & Palate and People with Disability. We speak against Gender Inequality.
Most victims come from the marginalized section of the society. Before us, nobody, be it the NGOs or Government, have thought of looking into this aspect of the tremendous violence a burn survivor suffers from. Their identity is lost due to facial burn (mostly). Since our society is “look based”, they are ostracized by the society as well as by their families. They need strong Mental Health support to get out from their shattered mental conditions. They need prolonged and very expensive corrective surgeries. These treatments are beyond their means. As per Honorary Supreme Court, Government and Private Hospitals are supposed to provide these treatments free of cost. But this does not happen. All of them have to face legal nuances to establish their Rights. That is also a very tedious and long drawn process. In short, one requires every support to get out of one’s horrific condition. A survivor needs medical (both physical and mental), legal, social, financial.... every support you think of to come into mainstream.
We help the survivors with surgeries one or two a year at a minimal cost. We work in networking for legal help, finding out short shelters, jobs and other rehabilitative measures for the survivors. We send policy recommendations to Authorities as a part of our advocacy. Other than these we participate in Workshops, trainings, seminars, conferences to exchange views on Women Empowerment and other developmental sectors.
