Restoring Smiles, Building Dignity: Inside EBMA Foundation’s Holistic Cleft Care Programme
Quick Facts: The "Smile for Life" Impact
- Regions Served: West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand
- Lives Transformed: 200+ free surgeries and holistic care interventions
- Network: 4 partner hospitals and 100+ medical/non-medical volunteers
- Core Philosophy: Restoring dignity, confidence, and comprehensive healthcare access
Founded in 2014 to champion equitable access to education and healthcare, the Eliza Begum & Mahammad Ali Foundation (EBMA Foundation) expanded its mission in 2023 to address a critical healthcare gap: Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Care. Through the "Smile for Life" initiative, the foundation goes beyond the operating room, delivering completely free, comprehensive cleft care to children and young adults from economically vulnerable families across Eastern India.

From Global Partnerships to Grassroots Impact
The journey began in partnership with Free To Smile, a US-based organisation dedicated to global cleft care. Operating out of our primary partner hospital in Kolkata, this initiative quickly evolved into a vital lifeline for families unable to afford specialised treatment.
Today, thanks to the generous backing of compassionate individuals and robust corporate partnerships, the programme operates across three states. It leverages a dedicated network of surgeons, anaesthetists, speech therapists, nurses, and social workers to ensure quality care is accessible to those who need it most.
A Holistic Model: Healing Beyond the Surgery
A cleft condition affects much more than a child’s physical appearance; it deeply impacts their ability to eat, speak, and thrive. Recognising this, the EBMA Foundation has pioneered an integrated, holistic care model:
- Poshan Prabal (Nutrition for Cleft Children): Surgical intervention is often delayed when children are underweight due to feeding difficulties. This crucial pillar addresses malnutrition pre- and post-surgery, ensuring children are strong enough for their procedures and recover safely.
- Dental Care: Focused on oral hygiene awareness and specific dental interventions, preventing long-term complications associated with cleft conditions.
- Empowering Cleft (Infrastructure Support): We actively donate essential equipment and instruments to our hospital partners, strengthening surgical infrastructure to ensure sustainable, long-term access to treatment.
Powering Change: The Muthoot "Shape A Smile" Project
A major milestone in expanding our reach has been the collaboration with Muthoot Finance Limited under their CSR Healthcare Initiative, the Muthoot Shape A Smile Project.
This partnership directly funds completely free cleft surgeries and comprehensive care for marginalised children in Kolkata. It is a powerful reflection of a shared vision: ‘Building a future where no child is denied the chance to smile simply because of financial constraints.’

Ruhi’s Story: Bringing Hope From Uncertainty
“Seeing Ruhi smile for the first time without hesitation was a miracle we thought we couldn't afford. The foundation didn't just heal her smile; they gave our family hope." - Ruhi’s mother.
Every child deserves the opportunity to eat, speak, and live with absolute confidence. Ruhi is just one of the 200+ children whose lives have been rewritten through compassionate, accessible cleft care in Kolkata. Her journey from medical uncertainty to a bright, confident future is a testament to what holistic intervention can achieve.
A Trusted Partnership
As a BCF-registered NGO, the EBMA Foundation stands at the intersection of grassroots impact and corporate vision. We recognise that while NGOs provide the specialised expertise on the ground, the scale of such life-altering work is made possible through strategic funding and corporate synergy.
BCF serves as the vital bridge connecting corporate leaders who wish to give back to society with vetted, high-performing organisations like the EBMA Foundation. By collaborating through the BCF platform, corporates can move beyond traditional philanthropy and become active stakeholders in restoring the dignity and health of the next generation.
